Game of Thrones Season 6 Episode 5: Sansa receives a message. She opens it. It’s apparently a note from Littlefinger. She goes to find him in a nearby camp. She’s rightfully pissed at him for handing her over to Ramsay Bolton. She’s on the verge of having Brienne kill him, but she resists. She denies his support and tells him to leave, despite his offering of an army.
Arya continues to train under the tutelage of Jaqen. He tells her about the Faceless Mens’ history, and soon gives her a task to assassinate a woman by the name of Lady Crane. Arya goes to the theater. She sees a play that reenacts the death of her father. Backstage, Arya scopes out how she might be able to sneak poison into Lady Crane’s drink. She relays this info to Jaqen when she returns to the fortress. Arya tells him that Lady Crane is a decent woman – and a talented actress. Arya inquires about who wants her dead. Jaqen tells her that a servant does not ask questions.
Bran is on another one of his vision quests with the Three-Eyed Raven. In the vision world, they see the Children. Bran sees one of the Children drive a stone blade into a man. He witnesses the first White Walker born. When Bran awakes, the same child who created the Walker approaches him. She said that they had to create the Walkers to protect themselves in the war with Men.
Meanwhile, the Kingsmoot occurs on the Iron Islands. Yara Greyjoy announces her right to the throne. Theon supports her in full, and shoots down any of her opposition. After the speeches are given, Euron arrives to challenge Yara. She announces that her first act as queen will be to execute Euron, the person who killed her father. He admits to this act. Euron says that he will build a huge fleet and align his forces with Daenerys. People around him start to cheer. Yara and Theon escape the island during Euron’s initiation. They take an entire fleet of ships.
Jorah reveals to Daenerys that he’s contracted greyscale. She commands him to find a cure and to heal himself and, once done, return to her. She tells him that she cannot rule the 7 Kingdoms without him by her side.
In Meereen, Tyrion meets with Kinvara, another Red Priestess. She stands before him. They ask for her help. Vaerys reveals his skepticism, and refers to her, and others like her (namely Melisandra, who sorta messed up the whole “chosen one” prophecy), as a “fanatic.” She ultimately persuades him by relaying to him details of his past – ones that not many people know. In the end, she tells him that they both serve the same queen and that, if he’s truly a friend of Daenerys, he has nothing to fear from her.
Bran finds himself in the mountains. Winter has fallen. He meanders through an army of corpses. The Night King is there, too. The Night King grabs Bran’s arm, which jostles him out of his vision state. He returns to the Three-Eyed Raven’s tree. The Raven tells him that the Night King knows how to find him now and that he and his friends must leave. The Three-Eyed Raven says that it’s now time for Bran to step into the Three-Eyed Raven role. Bran asks if he’s ready. The old man says, “no.”
Jon, Sansa, and Davos try to devise a plan that’ll help them take back the North.
Before Bran and Co. can escape the tree, the White Walkers found them. The Children of the Forest tell Meera to get Bran, who’s inconveniently trapped in a vision. The CotF try their hardest to hold them off, but they don’t have much success. There are too many of the creatures. With Hodor’s help, they manage to pull Bran’s sled away from the creatures.
But the Walkers continue to follow. They escape out of a door – an into the snowstorm.
Meera commands Hodor to “hold the door.” Bran, still trapped in his vision world, sees a young Hodor, who collapses to the ground in seizure. He yells, “Hold the door.” He repeats this over and over and over again. Meanwhile, in the waking, present world, the White Walkers break through the door that Hodor’s holding. They slowly devour him.
In the dream world, Hodor’s speech gradually slurs until “hold the door” turns into “hodor.”
