He also gave us arguably the best Iron Man film (the third one), and didn’t lose his flair for cracking dialogue and slapstick violence whilst on blockbuster duty.
The Nice Guys has plenty of both. Black’s latest brash action-comedy is a shambolic trip to Los Angeles, circa 1977, where Russell Crowe’s corpulent thug-for-hire and Ryan Gosling’s dimwit detective join forces to discover the whereabouts of a missing activist, whose disappearance is linked to the death of a porn star and a mysterious movie that someone is prepared to kill for.
But forget the chaotic and circuitous plot – which also throws in concerns over killer bees and LA’s pollution problem – and revel in a seedy seventies milieu of polyester and beige, decadent parties, The Waltons on TV, and big billboards promoting Airport ’77 and Smokey and the Bandit.
A buddy movie is only as good as its resident buddies, and Crowe and Gosling are a perfect mismatch. The oafish Aussie could almost be playing himself with a sly wink, while the Gos reveals a Bruce Campbell-like flair for deadpan and physical comedy that’s undeniably groovy.
The Nice Guys may lack the zing of Black’s 2005 gem Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and the pulsing vibe of Boogie Nights, but it’s an enjoyably manic retro romp, and Gosling alone is worth the price of admission.
